Working on a project to electrically connect two metal pieces, John Hickey from Boston, Massachusetts yielded a fortunate discovery in 1879. As he utilized a clothespin to keep the parts together while soldering, he noticed small indentations remaining on the metal. Seeing an opportunity for benefit, the engineer cleverly fashioned the hickey, which continues to be beneficial today.

Following his invention in 1879, Hickey was granted a patent for it in 1880, which he then sold to the American Electrical Works Company. This allowed them to manufacture hickeys the following year – 1881.
